Combining Lean and Six Sigma for accelerated results
In the race for doing more with less, combining Lean and Six Sigma is the best approach for organisations to
achieve accelerated results and reap the full benefits of Lean and Six Sigma efforts.
Lean and Six Sigma are like two branches of the same tree.
While Lean focuses on identifying and eliminating waste in the production or service delivery system, Six Sigma
focuses on identifying and eliminating process variation and defects in delivered products or services. Each may be
deployed separately for certain organisational needs and goals, depending upon the environment. If deployed
separately, they should not be set up as competitors, but rather they should be introducted as having clear and
complementary goals.
By strategically combining Lean and Six Sigma together and consolidating each of their tools into a Lean Six
Sigma toolbox, the trick is to select the right tools for the given situations.
This drives an integrated approach to maximizing people, facilities and overall capacity to create the most
efficient and cost effective environment by:
Continuously identifying and eliminating waste in operations in order to reduce costs
Continuously providing adequate tools in order to control variability of the process and thus improve
predictability of capabilities
Lean Six Sigma is a powerful and dynamic process improvement methodology that brings a host of valuable tools to
the workplace. When deployed effectively with leadership support and commitment and the right training on the right
tools, Lean Six Sigma can make a huge difference in the way organisations work.
