Kanban (Pull) Systems

Introduction:

Kanban is an essential Lean implementation tool. The Kanban system is a way of synchronizing the material and information flow of disconnected processes to enable Just in Time production. Kanbans are used to control material and information movement and production execution through the pull system. Kanbans are signals or visual controls that trigger events in organisations. Kanbans helps organisations avoid errors and balance the “flow.” Whether it is the office or the production shopfloor, effective signals increase communication, put the employee in control and require less management involvement.

This course will teach participants how to design and implement a visual replenishment system. Emphasis is also placed on lot size reduction and effective capacity utilisation as an enabler of Kanban systems. The training will be a combination of lecture, exercises, and discussions on how to use Kanban to implement a pull system.

Duration: 2 Days

Target Audience:

Managers, operational and administrative staff involved in Kanban (pull) systems implementation from both the manufacturing and service (including banking and finance, logistics, healthcare, government and public service) sectors

Programme Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define Kanban correctly
  • Explain the differences between push and pull systems
  • Explain the types of Kanban and when they are used
  • Explain the functions of Kanban
  • Calculate Kanban quantities
  • Describe the steps in circulating Kanban
  • Use the prerequisites of Kanban to evaluate the readiness of the organization to implement a Kanban system
  • Demonstrate how withdrawal and production Kanbans work
