Introduction:
Internal auditing is fundamental to any improvement initiative. The ISO 14001:2004 standard requires that an
organisation conduct internal environmental management system audits to determine the effectiveness of its
environmental management system. Trained auditors must carry out these audits. However, most internal audits
carried out provide little improvement benefits and are conducted merely for compliance.
This 2-day course is designed to take participants through all stages of an environmental management system
internal audit to emphasize the challenges in conducting an internal audit and the resulting business value.
Through practical exercises, participants will prepare for, conduct, and report on an internal audit. From this
experience, course participants will learn how to accurately interpret and audit against the ISO 14001:2004
requirements. Course participants will also learn how to develop an effective internal audit programme, establish
or improve the existing internal audit system, and plan and conduct effective internal audits.
